When a nagging injury forced Josh to take a hiatus from training in Jiu Jitsu, he didn’t miss a beat a stepped into our Fitness Performance classes.
Josh began training at Straight Blast Gym Buford in the summer of 2018. It was Josh and his son, Garrett, both looking to get involved in our Jiu Jitsu programs. Josh began training in our Foundations program (for beginners) and Garrett in our Growing Gorillas Kids program. It wasn’t long before Josh was promoted to our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program and Josh never looked back.
Josh’s wife Frannie told us about her husband’s attraction to Jiu Jitsu and why he started to decided to start training at Straight Blast Gym Buford:
“Josh is an avid UFC fan and chose Jiu Jitsu as his outlet for physical and mental exercise when his son showed an interest – The two of them started Jiu Jitsu together, creating another unique opportunity for bonding. He loves it!“
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach and black belt Sean Coleman added this about Josh:
“Josh’s whole family is awesome. The entire Rector clan always comes in with a positive attitude and they’re super friendly. Josh is a very good “Jiu Jitsu Dad” in that he supports his son, doesn’t helicopter over his classes, and they it seems like they have an awesome relationship as a result.”
What Coach Sean is referring to is that when Josh is watching his son (Garrett) train he doesn’t shout out instructions, sideline coach, or scold him for making a mistake. Josh is always supportive of his son, both on and off the mats. When not at the gym Josh and Garrett have been known to practice Jiu Jitsu in their home’s basement.
Earlier this year when Josh was having to deal with a nagging injury he began regularly attending our Fitness Performance classes, rather than take time off from the gym entirely. In the last 2 weeks of December Josh attended 10 fitness classes, finishing out 2021 with a bang!
Fitness Performance Coach James Morton said the following about Josh:
“Josh has a been a great addition to class. He’s committed and brings a good energy and attittude with him. With his recent awesome attendance I’ve seen notable gains in his conditioning and strength.”
Josh leads a busy and active life outside of the gym. His wife, Frannie, gave us some intel on her husband:
“He enjoys the outdoors and doesn’t shy away from a new adventure or competition. He loves the gym at SBG, he compliments the coaches and team regularly. Josh has a continuous improvement mindset and loves the challenge that SBG and Jiu Jitsu provide while staying physically active and in shape. He’s also very social and joining SBG provided him an opportunity to meet new people. Outside of the gym you’ll find Josh spending time with his family, riding his one-wheel, flying his drone, getting out on a catamaran and diving, or riding his quads at hunting camp. He’s always on the move.“
