Give Your Child the Gift of Real Self-Defense Skills, Tremendous Self-Confidence, and a Seriously Fun Sport

With students ranging from ages 5 to 13, our kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are designed to teach your child THE most effective martial art on the planet for self-defense and incredible self-confidence while guaranteeing that they have a ton of fun in the process.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an incredible ground-based martial arts discipline from Brazil that has become the fastest growing sport, self-defense system, and fitness activity in the world.

Thanks in large part to the exploding popularity of the UFC, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms are popping up at a pretty quick rate. But, not all schools are made the same. SBG Atlanta gives your child access to the highest quality Black Belt Jiu Jitsu instruction available, led by SBG Black Belt Phillipe Gentry.

We never water down our program or sell belts, yet we also make sure that kids are training safe, progressing, feeling confident, enjoying themselves, and building their character all at the same time. It's pure, high-quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training that's going to transform your child into a well-rounded athlete and an even better person.

Spidermonkeys (Ages 4 to 5)

Coming soon to our Atlanta location!

Our Spidermonkey program is all about introducing our youngest students to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

SBG's Spidermonkey program teaches basic and essential athletic and
grappling skills to our students, as many of them are engaging in sports or
extracurricular activities for the very first time. Classes are 45 minutes
in length and consist of fundamental Jiu Jitsu movements, postures, and
positions.

At 4 and 5 years old, these students are not expected to learn or execute
high-level Jiu Jitsu movements and submissions, but rather use their base
(balance), leverage, and momentum to control grappling situations.
Students who learn these skills are well-prepared to deal with potential
real life bullying situations, in addition to applying their new athletic
skill set to other sports and activities.

chimpanzees (Ages 6 to 8)

Our largest and most popular kids class is our Chimpanzee age group.

This group of Growing Gorillas really begins to focus on the detailed aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In addition to obtaining and escaping from dominant positions, our Chimps begin learning multiple submissions, passes, and sweeps from every possible scenario.

This is the age group where you'll really start to see Brazilian Jitsu Skills start to come together as a coherent, intentional strategy with students beginning to grasp more advanced concepts that apply to scoring in sport Jiu Jitsu as well as self defense applications.

There are 2-3 coaches on the mat with our Chimps, and classes are 60 minutes long.

jr. gorillas (Ages 9 to 13)

Our oldest group of Growing Gorilla Jiu Jitsu athletes. Jr Gorilla classes are taught very much like our adult classes, giving the athletes more responsibility and trust.

The Jr. Gorillas age group is starting to prepare for transition into the adult classes and all of the advanced Jiu Jitsu techniques, strategies, concepts, and scenarios that will be covered at that level.

There are 1 or 2 coaches on the mats with our Jr Gorillas, and classes are 60 minutes in length.

Micro Monkeys (Ages 3 to 4)

Our youngest Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes spend class learning the fundamental movements that are imperative to athletes of all sports: running, jumping, crawling, using their hips, and developing fast, explosive movement.

In terms of technique, our biggest goal with the Micro Monkey Jiu Jitsu students is showing them how to get on top of their opponent and stay on top of their opponent, as well as how to escape if that situation were to happen to them.

Micro Monkey classes are 30 minutes long – long enough to teach important concepts but not so long that they start to get antsy and restless (which results in them running around like maniacs).

As for progress, there are 3 tiers of skill in our Micro Monkeys class, which are represented with different color t-shirts.

Spider Monkeys (Ages 5 to 6)

Like our Monkey program, our Spiders are learning the most fundamental and foundational aspects of grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, primarily how to get on top of their opponent and stay on top of their opponent.

Once they've achieved a position, our Spider Monkey students are now learning about the next steps they can take, whether it be a sweep, pass, or submission.

Spider Monkeys wear a gi and follow the traditional belt ranking system of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Belt promotions are earned through attendance and showing improvement in their skillset. There are 2 coaches on the mat for all Spider Monkey classes.

Classes are 45 minutes long in length.

"We drive over an hour & it's worth every mile!"
My daughter and I have been at this gym for almost a year. We drive over an hour to get there and it's worth every mile. The coaches and staff are amazingly friendly and supportive. If I could drag this gym closer to home we would be there more than three times a week!

Have Questions?

Have Questions About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes at Straight Blast Gym?

Why should my kid do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instead of Karate or Taekwondo?

Let’s be clear, there is value in your child participating in ANY martial art. Getting an opportunity to experience discipline, structure, and accountability is a great thing. Where Brazilian Jiu Jitsu separates itself from a martial art like karate or taekwondo is in its practicality. There is no martial art that is more applicable to real-life issues and bullying than Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Think about your typical bullying situation; a bigger kid picking on a smaller kid, right? BJJ was specifically created to allow smaller people to defeat a larger opponent without having to throw a single punch.

Is it dangerous for my kid to participate in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

No more so than it is for your child to play baseball, basketball, or soccer. Rest assured, your kids won’t be in here punching and kicking other students. We are all about teaching our kids how to defend themselves, but we do so in an incredibly controlled environment. One of the beautiful things about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that you’ll never need to throw a single strike for it to be effective. This allows for your child to defend themselves without getting in trouble at school for hitting another student.

How many days per week can my child train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at SBG?

New kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes are allowed to attend up to 3 classes per week.

Do you offer a striking program for kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes?

Yes. Striking is involved in our kids MMA program. All of our new young students start with Braziilan Jiu Jitsu and have the opportunity to move into our Mixed Martial Arts classes. Before we begin teaching your child how to physically strike someone else, we want to make sure they possess the maturity and acumen necessary to possess this knowledge.
