Typically the selection for our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kid of the Month is a student that has been with SBG Buford for a few months, if not over a year. This month the coaches decided to shake things up and go with the band-new Matthan Zack, who just started with us last month.
“I wanted to start training in Jiu Jitsu after wrestling with my dad at night” said Matthan. That was all it took for Matthan to get started in SBG’s Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program. His father, Tim, had previously enrolled in our adult Jiu Jitsu program and Matthan wanted to learn some of the tricks that his dad had picked up. Matthan got himself a fresh new gi and was in class within the next couple of weeks, ready to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Matthan’s mom, Amy, also got in the mix and decided to start training in our Fitness Performance and Fitness Kickboxing classes.
Between our martial arts and fitness programs, the entire Zack family now trains together at Straight Blast Gym Buford!
Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coach Randy Garcia told us this about Matthan, and why he selected him as our Kids Martial Arts Student of the Month:
“Matthan is very consistent, and always shows up for class 3 times a week. He has also shown early signs of being a very good leader in class by helping out his teammates with the techniques of the day. Matthan is very studious as well. He always shows up before class and asks questions about the technique we are doing which tells me that he goes home and thinks about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.“
Matthan is the perfect embodiment of what a new student in SBG Buford’s Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program should be. He is polite, well-behaved, and ready to learn from his coaches. Matthan pays attention when his coaches are giving direction or showing a technique, and he isn’t afraid to ask questions if he doesn’t understand what he’s supposed to be doing. When drilling or sparring with his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teammates, he’s proven to be a safe training partner.
When asked what he enjoys most about training in Straight Blast Gym Buford’s Jiu Jitsu program, Matthan told us this:
“On Saturdays, we do a lot of sparring and that’s my favorite thing to do. I like doing takedowns and the submissions that we learn in class.”
