Elite Black belt Jiu-Jitsu instruction
Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense and fitness.
Special OfferThe men and women that join Straight Blast Gym's Jiu Jitsu program are looking for REAL training with REAL people that will provide REAL results.
This incredible ground-based martial arts discipline from Brazil has grown in the last few decades from niche competition communities to a world-renowned self-defense system and fitness activity embraced by all ages, sizes, and demographics.
Thanks in large part to the exploding popularity of the UFC, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA gyms are popping up at a pretty quick rate. But, not all schools are made the same. SBG Atlanta gives you access to the highest quality Black Belt Jiu Jitsu instruction available, led by SBG Black Belt Phillipe Gentry. While many of these new schools are being taught by part-time coaches providing part-time results, SBG Buford has been providing quality, award-winning results to our students for over 10 years.
Jiu Jitsu students want MORE from life, both in the way that they feel and the way they project themselves. The popular grappling art is renowned for instilling men and women with incredible confidence after you learn to successfully defend yourself, and even defeat, a large and menacing opponent.
If you’re looking for real-world self-defense, an extraordinary workout, a tribe that treats you like family, and a hobby that’s challenging and fun, it’s time to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at SBG Atlanta.

Get started with our 8-week foundations program
Unlike other Jiu Jitsu schools who often thrust students into a full martial arts class (which feels super intimidating), all our new Jiu Jitsu athletes start in our 8-week Foundations program. In Foundations, we teach the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu in a smaller, more controlled, and non-intimidating environment.
In addition to learning the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu, you’ll get in “Jiu Jitsu shape” at a more comfortable and sustainable pace. Most BJJ practitioners will tell you that getting in shape for Jiu Jitsu can only be done by actually doing Jiu Jitsu.
Because of the way we’ve structured Foundations, we’ve had a tremendous success rate of people enjoying their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training and cultivating a controlled and friendly environment. Our #1 priority is for you to feel safe and part of the tribe from your first class.

"When I step on the mat, there's no place I'd rather be."
We drive over an hour & it's worth every mile!
My daughter and I have been at this gym for almost a year. We drive over an hour to get there and it's worth every mile. The coaches and staff are amazingly friendly and supportive. If I could drag this gym closer to home we would be there more than three times a week!
Their motto is not a gimmick!
I found out really quickly that the "One Tribe One Vibe" moto is not a gimmick. It's their real way of life. I am a near 40 husband and father of four and having people who really want to see you achieve your goals makes it easy to show up consistently. This gym is amazing and I love it there!

Have Questions About Jiu Jitsu Classes at SBG?
Here are some frequently asked questions. If you still have questions about the program, please click the button below to contact one of our coaches.
Contact usDo I need any Jiu Jitsu experience to start?
Absolutely not. The vast majority of the new students that enroll in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program have zero experience. All new students will begin their Jiu Jitsu journey in our Foundations program, learning the most fundamental (and most important) aspects of the sport. In addition to learning the basic elements of jiu jitsu with other beginners, Foundations classes are taught at a moderate pace so that you can gradually improve your conditioning as you go. If you feel like you’re out-of-shape and are intimidated about the thought of exercising in front of others, don’t you worry, we’ve got you covered and aren’t trying to make you get sick during class.
What kind of attire do I need to wear to Jiu Jitsu class?
Half of our Intermediate and Advanced Jiu Jitsu classes, and ALL of our Foundations classes, are conducted in the Gi (the traditional two-piece uniform consisting of a jacket and pants, along with a belt which communicates your rank). The other half of our Intermediate and Advanced Jiu Jitsu classes are conducted in “No Gi” attire, where you will wear a rash guard (a very tight shirt) and a pair of board shorts or No Gi Pants (also known as spats) that do not have pockets. Gi and No Gi classes will be clearly marked so you will know what attire to wear to class.
Can I get hurt doing Jiu Jitsu?
Of course. Like any sport or physical activity, there’s always a chance to get banged up or injured. At SBG, we have a saying that perfectly sums up our training methodology: ‘Upgrade the software without damaging the hardware.’ In other words, training hard is great, but training rough is stupid. Creating a safe training environment is one of our Core Values, and we pride ourselves on having an extremely low injury rate. In fact, the majority of our students that miss time because of an injury get hurt playing sports OUTSIDE of the gym (cue Basketball, skateboarding, jumping into a pool after enjoying a few cocktails… that’s where the majority of our students get banged up). We take every precaution to make sure our students leave class feeling AWESOME, not hurt.
Do you want to know the biggest determinant in staying healthy and preventing injuries? That would be YOU! If you come into class with the mindset of training smooth and getting better, and not winning every minute of every practice like it’s the world championships, then you will do just fine.
Do I have to fight or compete to participate in Jiu Jitsu?
That would be a big NO. Roughly 5% of our Jiu Jitsu students actively compete in competitions. You are much more likely to find a 35 year-old father of three who wants to lose 20 pounds and have fun while learning Jiu Jitsu, than you are an 18 year old who wants to be in the next Ultimate Fighter. At SBG, you will never be expected or pressured to compete in martial arts competitions.
But what if I DO want to compete in Jiu Jitsu?
Oh yes. Make no mistake, we are a legit martial arts gym and we produce many legit martial artists. SBG Atlanta has a rich history of competing in Jiu Jitsu, and you will have ample opportunities to do so if that interests you. Every year there are at least half-a-dozen Jiu Jitsu events and tournaments in the metro-Atlanta area that our Tribe participates in. If you are interested in competing, you can attend our Competition Team Training classes where you will have access to extra training classes that are more intense and focused in a comeptition-like training environment. Not only will we help you prepare for your competition with personalized feedback/game plans, but we will walk you through the entire process of how to register, make weight, etc.
Do I have to sign a contract?
Every member of Straight Blast Gym is on an active membership, but the length of your agreement is entirely up to you. We offer membership agreements that range from multiple years to month-to-month. As long as you’re excited about training with us and ready to make some awesome changes in your life, we can craft your membership agreement to suit your individual needs.
I’ve been burned in the past by gyms that trapped me into long contracts. Can I just take one class at a time?
If we had a nickel for every time we’ve heard this 😔. We get it, big box gyms make their money by signing you up to a long-term agreement and hoping that you never come back. It’s sad, and it makes people very skeptical of joining a new gym. Well, allow us to make this very clear…that is the exact opposite of how we operate our business!
Entering our Foundations program, the longest agreement you’ll even be allowed to start on is 6 months. This is done for your protection and peace of mind. SBG is more than just a gym, we are a TEAM. Because of this, we ask that new students coming into our Jiu Jitsu program can give us at least 6 months, but we also realize that this is a new sport and a new environment for you, so we’re not going to ask you to make some ridiculous 2 year commitment before you’ve even stepped on the mats.
