  • Straight Blast Gym now carries Damage Control Mouthguards

Protect your brain and teeth with a comfortable, stylish, form-fitting mouthguard from Damage Control.

Every martial arts student should own a mouthguard, especially if that martial art involves lots of contact like Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, or Mixed Martial Arts. Most people think of mouthguards as protecting their teeth, but the real value is the protection it provides your brain. With all of the science that has come out over the past few years surrounding concussions and CTE, everyone that is participating in contact sports should wear a mouthpiece.

Damage Control is one of the most respected mouthguard providers in the martial arts field, and they are now available at both Straight Blast Gym Buford and Straight Blast Gym Atlanta.

Damage Control offers you two separate options; both of which allow you to mold your new mouthguard from the comfort of your own home.

Option 1 is the boil-and-bite. This mouthguard is molded by soaking it in boiling hot water for 60 seconds, before putting it in your mouth and biting down on it to make it form to your teeth. The boil-and-bite mouthguards are not as comfortable or stylish as their customizable counterparts, but they are about a 1/3 of the price.

Option 2 is to purchase the custom kit. With the custom mouthguards, you will still take your own mold but instead of boiling a pre-made mouthguard, you are given a putty to insert into your mouth. When complete, you send the putty and your order form to Damage Control with the pre-paid envelope that is located inside your kit. About two weeks later your custom-designed and fitted mouthguard will show up at your front door. To make it super clear, watch the short YouTube video below.

The custom mouthguard kit is $25 but in total, you will spend $75 – $125 on a Damage Control custom mouthguard. You purchase the kit from SBG, but when you fill out your order form and send in your mold you will pay an additional $60 – $100 depending on exactly what you want. The cost is considerably more than a boil-and-bite, but the fit will be much more comfortable in your mouth and make breathing far easier (plus you can design it with whatever you want).

Regardless of which mouthguard you select, you’re taking great strides in protecting your teeth and brain; something that we highly recommend for all of our martial arts students.
