Mike Greene is about to receive his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more respected and revered athlete at SBG Buford than Mike Greene. A veteran on the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu mats, Mike has been training with Straight Blast Gym Buford since December of 2014. For six years he has been showing up constantly, helping his teammates to grow and improve, and leading by example.
Coming to SBG Buford with high school wrestling experience, Mike wanted to expand his grappling skillset by learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As a white belt, he did extremely well in competitions and quickly worked his way up to blue belt. It was obvious, even early on, that Mike was going to be with the SBG Tribe for a long time.
SBG Buford’s Head Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coach Phil Gentry had this to say about Mike:
“What can you say about Mike other than he’s a true OG and one of my favorite students. Not only is he a consistent presence on the mats, but he’s a person that I can partner up with anyone and I know they’re going to get in a good, safe, and challenging role.”
Mike’s ability to help others improve their Jiu Jitsu, while also continuously improving his own skillset is one of the major reasons that he is receiving his brown belt from Coach Phil, later this month.
In addition to being a team player on the mats, Mike helped out the SBG Tribe several years ago when one of our MMA athletes was unable to compete in a scheduled fight, and thus it looked like the fight was going to be canceled (which really stinks for the opponent, who put in a lot of hard work and had nothing to do with the cancellation of the bout). On 1 week’s notice, Mike stepped up and accepted his first-ever MMA fight, despite having very little experience in boxing and Muay Thai. He not only took the fight on short notice but WON after 3 rounds of dominating the action.
Mike is also a Legacy member at SBG Buford, which is the highest tier membership available to our athletes. Legacy is reserved for students that exemplify the best of Straight Blast Gym, and Mike was an obvious candidate for this honor.
