Kids Belt Progressions
Let's talk about Kids Jiu Jitsu Belts
As a part of your child's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey, they will receive stripes and belts to show their progression and status. Most parents at SBG aren't familiar with the hierarchy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but we're going to fill you in right now so that you have a full understanding of how your child can receive promotions, when they'll receive promotions, and what all is involved in the process.
What are stripes?
Through a combination of good attendance and showing progression on the mats, your child will be awarded white stripes that go the black section of their belt. These stripes signify continued progress towards earning their next belt. Kids can earn up to four stripes on their belt before it is time to advance to the next belt.
What about earning belts? There are so many....what do they mean?
Your child will start with a white belt. After they have achieved four stripes on their belt, they'll be eligible to receive their next belt (grey and white). The image below shows you the progression of belts in Kids BJJ:
What happens when my child receives a new belt?
Getting a belt promotion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a big deal. Unlike a lot of other martial arts taught in Amercia, we don't give out new belts every 6 weeks. When your child has put in month after month of hard work and receives their next belt, they know that it is earned and legit!
When it's time for a promotion, we'll send your child home with a postcard that has the date and time of their belt promotion (they're always held inside of our regular class times). We invite and encourage you to bring out the family and friends to be a part of the belt promotion and celebrate your child's accomplishment.
What are those multi-colored stripes I see on the kid's belts?
The bright colored stripes are distributed to the kids when they bring back their monthly Life-Skills homework assignments, whereas the white stripes are given out for a mixture attendance and skill progression.
