When asked who they wanted as the Martial Artist of the Month for June, Coaches Sean and Phillipe both said the same thing: Takia.

    jiu jitsu, kickboxing

Takia Winrow is fresh off of a great performance at a local Jiu Jitsu competition not too far from Straight Blast Gym Buford. Having trained with Straight Blast Gym for over a year, Takia is quickly moving up the ranks as one of our favorite students and training partners. She does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at SBG with her husband Matt and daughter Ayana.

In May, Takia competed in the Kakuto Challenge Brazilian Jiu Jitsu event. Competing in only her 2nd Brazilian Jiu Jitsu event, she won her division, bringing home a gold medal! It was eveident from the rip that Takia had put in a lot of hours, as her weight was down, her strength was up, and her jiu jitsu game was on point!

Head Brazilian Jiu Jitsu andMMA Coach Phillipe Gentry had this to say about Takia:

Takia is a joy to have in class. You can tell that she really enjoys the journey; the training, the sweat, the improvement, and the results. She doesn’t belt chase (just training to move up to the next belt level), which I like. Every training session should be an experience and you can tell that she is having a good time.

Takia isn’t the only coach who loves having her in class. Coach Sean Coleman was Takia’s first jiu jitsu coach, and remembers back when she frist started training:

In the beginning I think she startd training because her husband and kid were doing jiu jitsu, but after a few classes it was clear that she was all about it!

She’s just like Ayana (her daughter); she is super tough. She’ll come back, class after class, and just keeps getting better. It’s easy to quit when you’re smaller and less experienced than a lot of the guys, but she enjoys the process. That’s how it’s supposed to be.

There is no doubt that Takia has big things in her future. She is the kind of student that makes class better, through her attitude, work ethic, and determination. Great work Takia!
