    General

Working in law enforcement is one of the most important and noble jobs that one can undertake, and we want to do our part to arm our men and women in blue with the tools needed to protect themselves and others from those wishing to do them harm.

Life as a police officer can be tough. Every time you start your shift you are risking your life to help serve and protect others. At Straight Blast Gym Atlanta, we want to do our part in helping our local LEOs (law enforcement officers) protect themselves and those in their community.

Straight Blast Gym Atlanta is proud to offer active Law Enforcement Officers 30% off of their martial arts training

If offering up a substantial discount to active LEOs will help to get them involved in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and/or Muay Thai training then we are happy to do it. While new police recruits undergo tactical self-defense courses during their time at the academy, there is very little continued education being offered. We strongly believe police officers should regularly be receiving physical, self-defense training. It’s one thing to learn how to deal with a violent offender, it’s another to regularly get reps on dealing with these types of people.

To stay sharp and not get overwhelmed, you need to get regular repetitions so that when those particular skills are needed you don’t hesitate; you just act.

SBG Jiu Jitsu Coach Greg Carson, who is a retired 20 year police veteran, is a strong proponent of regular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for law enforcement officers.

Whenever I speak to law enforcement officers I tell them that times have changed, and the old control- techniques are no longer efficient and effective. Police officers have a lot of variables to deal with when they get into a physical confrontation. First and foremost, they’re often fighting for their lives; or for the lives of someone else. In addition, it’s easy for an untrained officer to use excessive force because their adrenaline is red-lining. These officers aren’t used to being in a fight so their adrenaline goes through the roof and mistakes are more likely to happen. Training in Jiu Jitsu not only gets them familiar with what it feels like to fight another human being but it shows you how and where to apply force and pressure so that you can neutralize the threat without killing someone.”

Coach Greg retired as a Lieutenant for Conyers Police Department. He was the commander of the Patrol and Special Operations divisions, as well as the Conyers Police Department’s SWAT Commander for 25 years. Because of his own experiences on the job, Greg began training with Straight Blast Gym in 2015.

Allen Russell, a Jiu Jitsu brown belt and 20+ year law enforcement veteran believes that his martial arts training affected every single encounter that he had when he was on patrol.

“Your entire approach to dealing with people, especially unruly people, changes when you understand how to protect yourself. Your sidearm becomes a secondary tool; something you’ll only have to use as a last resort. When you have the confidence to neutralize someone without needing a weapon it changes your entire approach and attitude.”
