Self Defense Week at SBG Buford!

A huge aspect of martial arts is the self defense aspect of the training. While there are numerous advantages to martial arts training such as weight loss, increased strength, enhanced cardio, and more energy, one of the main drivers that makes people want to do martial arts is so they have the ability to protect themselves.

At Straight Blast Gym, we want to make sure our student, young and old, are receiving that knowledge. Every few months we will devote an entire week of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu curriculum to Self Defense training, ensuring that our adults and kids feel confident that if they ever get into a situation where they need to defend themselves, they’ll be able to react in a timely and responsive manner. Now, of course all jiu-jitsu training is for self-defense but there is also a portion of bjj training that involves competitions and sport training. In these scenarios there are no punches, kicks, biting, groin shots, etc. We typically train under these rules, but sometimes you just need to shake things up and be prepared for the worst case scenario. After all, I doubt that a bully or attacker is going to agree not to punch or kick you :-).

Peter Le, a 5’1 140 pound college student had this to say about self-defense week:

“I like how it puts everything back in perspective. Coach Phillipe and Coach Mike kept reiterating, ‘get on top, stay on top’ which is really important. In a grappling situation, I’m really comfortable playing guard, but in a fight where strikes are involved, the best place to be is on top. Plus, it was fun doing slap jiu jitsu. It let me see how open I was to strikes from the bottom position”

Self Defense week isn’t just for the adults, as our kid’s practiced self defense techniques all week, as well. The SBG coaching staff would act out bullying scenarios so that our kids could see how their techniques can be used in a real-life situation. This is important, as we want all of our kids to be ready and able to protect themselves at any time. Some of our parents provided feedback on what they like about Self Defense Week at Straight Blast Gym:

“I like that my son gets to see real life scenarios played out. He relates really well to that.” LaJewel Witherspoon

“Kylie likes going over the 3 T’s; Talk, Tell and Tackle.” P.K. Ko

“Nick liked watching the coaches do role playing. Not only was it helpful but he found it very funny to see Coach Jolene picking on Coach Phillipe.” Steven Waugh

In a world where you can quickly find yourself in harm’s way, it is important to be prepared to defend yourself at a moment’s notice. Our coaches are here to make sure that you not only get in great shape, but that you have the confidence to know you can handle yourself in a sticky situation.
