SBG Shoots the Hooch
Join us on Sunday, August 14th, for a fun-filled day in the sun, floating down the river.
What is 'Shooting the Hooch'?
Shooting the Hooch refers to tubing down the Chattahoochee River. It's a decades-long tradition in Atlanta, and a wonderful way to spend a hot, summer day. You can use a tube or kayak to Shoot the Hooch.
Where to Meet
The plan is to meet at Paces Mill (3444 Cobb Pkwy SE) and leave by 10:30am; carpooling up to Powers Island (5450 Interstate North Parkway). We'll have half of the people leave their vehicles at Paces Mill, while the other half transport people and tubes up to the Powers Island drop-in site.
*If you rent a tube you can ride to the launch site in one of the provided shuttle busses. You can also choose to ride with your teammates. It's up to you.
Arrival/Tube Rental/Dropping into the Water
We'll arrive at Powers Island fairly quickly (it's a 3 mile drive), where we'll park, rent tubes (if needed), and drop into the river. We expect to be in the water by 11am.
If you are planning to rent a tube, you will want to reserve your spot ASAP so that you don't get shut out. You can rent a tube by clicking right here. Tube rental is $25-40. You are also welcome to bring your own tube or kayak.
Once we're in the water, it's all about relaxing and enjoying each other's company. The distance from start to finish is 2.8 miles, which should take us 2-3 hours to complete (it depends on how often we stop and how fast the river is flowing). You are welcome to bring a floatable cooler (no styrofoam).
We'll finish our journey back at the Paces Mill Boat Ramp, where we'll exit the ramp and get back in our vehicles. Those who left their cars at Paces Mill will drop their teammates off at Powers Island and we'll call it a day.
If the weather is going to be yucky on the 14th, we'll look for an alternative Sunday Funday activity. Also, there's a chance that if there's excessive rain leading up to the 14th that the dam could be releasing more water than usual, resulting in the river moving very fast. If this is the case, we'll need to postpone our float. We'll let everyone know via email and social media if we have to postpone/pivot, but odds are that we'll be soaking up the sun and enjoying a few cold ones on August 14th.
