  • Kickboxing Tournament Yields Awesome Results For SBG

    General

One Saturday, June 30th, 13 of Straight Blast Gym’s Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts athletes arrived at the Infinite Energy Center to compete in the NFC Southeast Kickboxing tournament.

For 11 of Straight Blast Gym’s 13 competitors, they had no competition competing in mixed martial arts, kickboxing, or muay thai.  Many of them joined Straight Blast gym with no intentions of ever fighting in kickboxing or muay thai.  The NFC kickboxing tournament provided a fantastic opportunity to compete in a less-stressful environment without all of the bright lights and hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators.

The kickboxing athletes (not to be confused with our Fitness Kickboxing program) of SBG did an AMAZING job, with two of our brand new competitors winning their divisions and taking home their respective titles!  We picked up lots of wins, and even those who came up short in their matches looked really good in their respective contests.  Coach Patrick Barger, the Head Muay Thai and Striking coach at SBG Buford, had this to say about his athletes and their performance at the kickboxing tournament:

“Truly awesome.  To compete for the first time can be very nerve-wracking, and our guys and girls did a great job.  The most impressive thing was they way our men and women handled the results, whether they won or lost.  No crazy, obnoxious celebrations from our winners, and no sulking or arguing from those who lost.  I’m incredibly proud of how our kickboxing athletes performed and conducted themselves today.”

From the hard training that lead up to the event, to the dieting, the weigh-ins, and the actual fights, SBG Buford’s kickboxing competition team did an incredible job.  Men and women of different ages, backgrounds, and goals all came together to represent their gym and test their mental and physical abilities.

From all of your coaches, great job team!
