Coach Sean teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Straight Blast Gym Buford at 6am. He is an early riser by nature, often arriving to the gym closer to 5am so he can get in his strength training before his students roll in for class. Waking up early is tough, especially when he tends to stay late the night before, getting in his own Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, or Muay Thai training. Coach Sean frequently gets asked how he is able to train so frequently while not getting a full 8 hours of sleep. His answer will surprise you…..Epsom Salt Baths.

Epsom Salt baths are regularly used by athletes looking for some relief, whether it is from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, or Fitness Performance. The magnesium sulfate absorbs through the skin, aiding in recovery for your muscles. In addition to the benefits to your muscles, the mixture of the warm water and magnesium helps to relax the body and its nervous system. Sean attributes this as the main reason he is able to keep up his heavy training schedule, be an active father, and keep his energy levels high, despite not always being able to sleep a lot.

“Any parent can relate to the ‘late to bed, early to rise’ lifestyle, lol. Between jiu jitsu training and the kids, I don’t typically get in bed until after 11pm. I’m usually up around 4:30am, so most nights I’m lucky to get 6 hours of sleep. By hitting a 20 minute epsom salt bath before bed, my nervous system is so relaxed that as soon as my head hits the pillow, i’m out. It’s also helping me get into that deep REM sleep, so that even on a short night of sleep I feel well rested.”

While getting 5-6 hours of sleep isn’t recommended, it does happen. By utilizing epsom salt baths, Coach Sean is setting himself up to get maximum benefit from his sleep while getting the muscle recovery he needs to train in jiu jitsu and other martial arts 5-6 days per week. Along with the enhancements to his sleep and muscle recovery, epsom salt baths also help with:

    • Releasing toxins from the body

    • Reducing inflammation

    • Improving blood sugar levels

    jiu jitsu recovery

“I’ve had a bunch of my jiu jitsu students start doing epsom salt baths after training, and every single person comes back and tells me how they feel better, and less sore. It’s a staple in my recovery process.”

Epsom salt can be found at pretty much any grocery or drug store. It is not very expensive and is a great compliment to your martial arts and fitness training. Give it a try and enjoy the immediate benefits!
